Bérulle, Pierre de

Bérulle, Pierre de
(1575-1629)
   cardinal
Born in the château de Sérilly, near Troyes, Pierre Cardinal de Bérulle, with the help of Mme Acarie (religious name, marie de l'incarnation) established (1604) the Carmelite order in France. He also founded the secular congregation of the oratory (1611), which was a body of priests living in community but without monastic vows and subject to its own superior general. A contemplative and mystic, Bérulle was also an adviser to louis x III and was often in opposition to cardinal richelieu. Made a cardinal in 1627, Bérulle profoundly influenced the 17th-century French school of spirituality (jean duvergier du hauranne, st. vincent de paul, Charles de Condren). Cardinal de Bérulle's major writing, Discours de l'estat et des grandeurs de Jésus (1622), is itself inspired by the Augustinian heritage and Ignacian spirituality.
